Crocodiles at Windjana
Windjana Gorge, located off the Gibb River Road several hours drive east of Broome in Western Australia, is a wonderful location rich in geology and native wildlife. It has been protected as a National Park since 1971 and covers an area of approximately 2000 Hectares.
The gorge is approximately 3.5 kilometres long and has formed as the Lennard River has cut through the Napier Mountain Range. The gorge walls are spectacular, steep and reach a height of 100 metres.
The deep fertile soil which lines the river supports a variety of tall trees including native figs, paper barks and the leichardt tree. The trees and availability of water also support a variety of wildlife including water birds, corellas, fruit bats and literally hundreds of fresh water crocodiles which can be seen in abundance.
During the wet season the Lennard flows through the gorge and it is inaccessible, during the dry season the river stops flowing and forms a number of deep waterholes, which, despite the presence of the fresh water crocodile are fantastic for swimming (Fresh water Crocodile are not considered dangerous unless you are fish! WARNING, do not swim where Salt Water Crocodiles live – they can live in fresh and salt water and will eat you!)
The geology of the gorge is considered important as the sheer walls of the gorge uncover literally millions of years in sedimentary time and exposes what was once a giant coral reef.
